『Wir Kinder von UENO ZOO』とは、ベルリンと東京を拠点とする日本人アーチスト花 代と東京在住のドイツ人写真家Sebastian Mayerによるドイツ日本交流プロジェクトで す。
今年は、プロイセン(現ドイツ)と日本が国交をはじめて150年目に当たる年です。東京 は、この30年間で音楽、アート、カルチャーの発信都市へと大きく成長し、ニューヨーク、 パリ、ロンドンとの文化交流は幾度と行なわれ、互いに理解を深めてきました。それらと 比較すると、日本にはドイツ音楽や映画のファンは多くいるものの、二国間のカルチャ ーを繋ぐ草の根交流のパイプラインは未だ発展途上と言えます。既に存在する互いへ の感心をより活性化させるためは、関係を築き上げる行動へと歩みを進めることが必要 です。東京とベルリンで活動する私たちは、その後押しに尽力し、ふたつの街を繋げ ることを使命だと感じています。
ここ最近の興味深い傾向として、東京や大阪でも海外主要都市のように従来のホワイ トキューブ型アートスペースとは一線を画したオルタナティブアートスペースが数多く 生まれ、都市に新たな勢いをもたらしています。『Wir Kinder von UENO ZOO』では、ド イツで活躍する新しい世代のアーティスト、音楽家、思想家などを東京に点在するオ ルタナティブアートスペースを通して紹介することによって多くの架け橋を生みたいと 考えます。新世代のアーティストとスペースが、このプロジェクトを通して出会い、既成 にとらわれないアートイベントを共に作り上げる事で、両国の理解を深め、来年、再来 年へと継続可能な文化交流のプラットフォームを築いていくことが目的です。
ドイツと日本は第二次世界大戦での同盟、ワイマール憲法の日本国憲法への影響な ど、歴史的にも深い関係を築いてきました。また、今年は、日独国交150年を祝したイ ベントが数多く開催されています。そして、このプロジェクトからは、時代に即した新し い交流が生まれることでしょう。
また、現在、世界中のメジャーなメディアでは、日本と言えば震災や原発問題にフォー カスした情報が主に流されています。この企画には、そういった報道を聞きながらも日 本の今の状況を肌で感じたいというアーティストが、ドイツから何人も参加してくれます。 日本離れが進む今だからこそ国際交流を深め、発信力の強いアーティストに日本の 魅力、抱える問題点を知ってもらう事で日本という国を世界から孤立させない手段にな りうると信じています。このプロジェクトによって、日本の魅力をドイツとの交流を通して 再発見し、国内外に向けて共に発信していきたいと思います。

"Wir Kinder von UENO ZOO" was initiated to promote cultural exchanges between Germany and Japan, by German-born, Tokyo based photographer Sebastian Mayer and Japanese-born artist Hanayo who divides her time between Berlin and Tokyo.
In the last thirty years, Tokyo has become one of the world's top cities for art, music and culture and a wide range cultural exchanges has taken place between Tokyo and the cities of London, Paris and New York. Many Japanese people love German music and films, however, in comparison, the cultural ties between the two countries on a grassroots level are still not fully developed. To stimulate more interest in each other and maintain a strong relationship, we need to take action. Being artists working in both cities, our mission is to encourage people to become active participants in cultural exchange projects and act as a bridge for such endeavors.
Interestingly, like other major cities in the world, many alternative art spaces have sprung up in Tokyo and Osaka over recent years. Offering something different from conventional 'white cube' galleries and museums, alternative spaces are bringing new energy to their respective cities. With our project, "Wir Kinder von UENO ZOO," we would like to present a showcase of emerging German artists, musicians and thinkers at various alternative art spaces in Tokyo to serve as cultural ambassadors. A new generation of artists and spaces will come and work together to push the envelop of art events. Our aim is to build understanding and a long-lasting platform for cultural exchanges between the nations. This year, Germany and Japan celebrate the 150th anniversary of their diplomatic relations and so there will be many commemorative events. We hope that our project will boost cultural exchanges which are fresh and relevant to current times.
After the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, the attention of major media around the world has been focused mainly on the disaster and ongoing nuclear crisis. In spite of the devastating news, many German artists chose to participate in our project to see what is happening in Japan. With the Japanese tourism and economy continuing to suffer from those events, it becomes even more important to increase international exchanges to enhance mutual understanding and friendship. The participants will learn the issues and attractions of Japan during the course of the project. We believe their communication skills and acquired knowledge will help Japan to get back on its feet. Through cultural exchange between the two nations, together we will rediscover and communicate fascinating things about Japan to the world.
